The Corona pandemic has global consequences, both medical and economic. In Sri Lanka, schools and shops will be closed for months from March 2020. The many day laborers could no longer earn anything and tourism has been shut down, which means loss of income. The result is dramatic; people are not allowed on the streets. That means not going to work. No work is no income. No income means no food.
That is why we now mainly focus on providing emergency aid in the form of food parcels. The most necessary foodstuffs such as lentils, dried fish, soya, rice, flour, dahl and powdered milk are distributed.
We don't do that alone. Havonos works with our Dutch partners Wilde Ganzen, who doubles our donations, Rockids and SEHH. We do this through the organization Caritas, led by Father Anton. With your donation, this organization buys food packages. Father Harance, Father Beshman and Father Avalin, in consultation with the village heads, determined which families has the greatest need, so where the emergency packages should go. Sometimes a rewarding, but often also a harrowing task, because others, who are also having a hard time, are skipped by the necessity of making choices.
The communication within the country is nil, so that the population does not know where they stand. The situation is so hopeless that we can't imagine it.
